But since disk space is so cheap these days, it shouldn't be a problem. I have tried replaying a ripped track through a high end system to compare FLAC, a VBR (MP3) track and the original CD. This was using my nephew's laptop which has optical output, and I have to say there was very little difference between FLAC and the MP3. The tracks I ripped with EAC and encoded with Lame with VBR are reported as 207kbps in Foobar2000 (I think it just takes an average based on the file size). The rate varies as the track is played from 190-220kbps.ĭon't know if this helps, but what I'm planning on doing is ripping with EAC to flac, and using Media Monkey to "control" that archive. Then use dbpoweramp to convert them to MP3 LAME for insertion into iTunes. Ideally, I'd prefer to go with AAC but db needs extra codecs and its unclear which ones are needed and I'm fed up of trying to be honest - and secondary to that - both my PS3 & 360 refuse to see AAC audio files for some reason. I'm probably going about it in a awkward fashion, but having 2 seperate programs to organise the lossless & lossy archives seems an easy solution so that you know where you are with each archive - at least in your head anyway!
